Bordeaux, Champagne, and the best wineries France has to offer

French wineries produce the world’s most renowned wines. Some of the factors that allow the French to produce such a wide range of delicious wines are their diverse climate conditions and sophisticated production technology.

Bordeaux

Up to a third of French wines originate in the prestigious Bordeaux wine region. Additionally, Bordeaux’s red wines are considered the best in the world. Now you’re asking: why? You’ll find the answer in our article on Bordeaux.

Winemaking began to develop in the area around Bordeaux as early as the 13th century, and the most important event in the history of this region is considered to be the establishment of the Grand Cru Classé classification, which protects the region’s best wines.

The local winery Château Saint-Hilaire, which has been producing luxury wines since the end of the 18th century, is certainly worth visiting. The first owner, the naval officer Jean Lapierre, was enchanted by the unique terroir of this place – which, at that time, was mainly planted with olive trees. He correctly guessed that the sunny climate with cool Mediterranean breezes would be exceptionally good for vineyards. The Lapierre family still continues in the winemaking tradition today, and they produce wines from the Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties – as well as many others. Take a look at which Château Saint-Hilaire wines we have in our selection.

Champagne

The wineries in Champagne also make world-famous wines. This is mainly thanks to the combination of 300 years of experience in producing sparkling wines and the utterly unique terroir.

An interesting fact: Have you heard that the smaller the bubbles in your glass, the better quality of the wine you’re drinking? This is a myth. The quality of wine depends only on the grapes, the place where they were grown, and the winemakers’ production methods. However, the longer a wine has been in contact with a cork, the more CO2 pressure is lost. The result is more delicate chains of pearl-like bubbles forming, and the bubbles are also smaller.

You’ll find the Champagne Bouché winery located on one of the best terroirs of this region. Here, the Bouché family has been producing delicate sparkling wines for four generations, under strictly controlled conditions. Their 40 hectares of vineyards are spread out on one of the best terroirs of the region, and this is where they grow grapes that will be used for the highest quality Champagne wines. These wines are left to mature in their bottles for an unusually long time – at least 4 years. Nicolas Bouché personally supervises their quality.

Do you like Port? Discover the best wines from Portugal

When someone says Portuguese winemaking, the first thing that probably comes to mind is Port wine. This variety can only be produced in the Douro region. You can explore its varieties and its adventurous history in our special article on Port wine.

One of the specialties you can find in our shop is the renowned Port wine from the Quevedo winery in Douro. This small family winery has been growing grapes there since 1889. The siblings Oscar and Claudio Quevedo are managing 100 hectares of vineyards in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior subregions. The variety in the grapes’ aroma and taste enables them to create many styles of Port wine. Every Port lover will find their favorite among them. The owners additionally subscribe to a fresh, relatable philosophy – Oscar himself claims: “Port wine is taken too seriously. You don’t have to wait for a special occasion to open it. Treat yourself to Port every day.” Do you agree?

You’ll find the Italy’s best wineries in Tuscany and Piedmont

Italian winemaking plays an important role in Italian gastronomy. Its cradle is in Campania, where it was born 3000 years before the arrival of the Greeks. They even named Italy the “land of wine”.

Tuscany

Tuscany is an area with wineries that produce red wines that are famous worldwide, especially for their archival potential. Learn about the region’s history and interesting facts in our article about Tuscan winemaking.

You’ll surely remember the famous chubby bottles with straw woven around them. Discover more about it in our article on Chianti, Tuscan native tradition.

The second most famous Tuscan wine is Brunello di Montalcino. This traditional product of Tuscan viticulture is subject to stringent regulations for its production and maturation.

Before you learn more about Brunello in our separate article, browse our selection of wines from one of the main producers: the winery Tenuta IL. Poggione. Brunello wines were some of the first to be offered by local winemakers, and they were even among the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino consortium. These wines are produced in accordance with traditional production methods in combination with the most recent technology. They are updating the winemaking craft in other ways as well: for many years they have aiming for ecological sustainability and a minimal carbon footprint. This is also the reason why most of the work on their vineyards is done by hand.

Piemonte

Piedmont’s wine products are also among the highest-rated in the world. The wineries here owe their fame to their powerful, full-bodied wines that are rich in tannins.

One of the legendary wines from this region is Barolo. It’s named after the wine region where the vineyards are exclusively planted with the Nebbiolo variety. And why is Barolo called the “king of wines”?  Find out in our article about Barolo.

Browse our selection of luxury wines from the Marchesi di Barolo winery. You’ll find them at the Falletti palace, about an hour’s drive from Turin. The first owners of the vineyards were the Falletti marquises. Their successor, Pietro Abbona later made Barolo famous around the world – and even the first historical mentions of Barolo refer to wines he was producing. The old Abbona family continues to take care of the vineyards here. They sum up their know-how and winemaking skills in two words: understanding and respect. What does that mean in practice? The family relies on a perfect knowledge of the quality of their grapes, and on the qualities of the soil where they grow the vines. The approach the production of wine responsibly and with respect for the vineyards. The fact that this is not just empty talk is borne witness by the many awards the vineyard has been honored with in a wide range of international competitions.

The Piedmont wine Barbaresco offers a similar taste experience to Barolo. However, it differs in its structure and its potential for maturation. You can usually taste it sooner after the harvest than a Barolo.

You can also taste the best wineries in Chile

We can describe Chile as the oldest wine region in South America. The production of wine began there in the period of Spanish conquest. The vines were imported from Central America to Peru, and then later reached Chile.

The oldest wine region in Chile is the Maipo Valley. Summers are hot here, so the vineyards are irrigated with water from melting glaciers. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot red wines produced in this location are beloved worldwide. However, the greatest volume of production in Chile is in the Rapel Valley area.

The largest Chilean winery, Concha y Toro, has been offering the world fine wines since 1883. It is actually one of the world’s 10 largest wineries. It is therefore unsurprising that their vineyards can be found all across Child. Their legendary wines are produced particularly from the Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot varieties.
